maybe it is because you are going to fast or your strokes may not be right. try taking slow, long strokes and make sure your breathing rythem is at a level when you get enough air. there are many different workouts that focus on different things: speed swimming, distance swimming etc. However, you have to be able to do more than one or two laps (depending on the size of the pool) before you can do longer distances.

There could be a number of reasons why you feel like you cannot improve you endurance.
Perhaps your technique isn’t efficient enough and therefore you tire out too easily or your stroke gets worse the longer you swim. Having an efficient stroke will help make your swimming easier and it will help you swim more laps. You would need to ask the advice of someone who knows proper technique to show you whether you are doing it correctly.

You could also be going too fast and not pacing yourself so that when you reach the end of the pool you do not have enough energy to continue straight away. To be a long distance swimmer you need to learn to pace yourself – all long distance athletes must understand the importance of this.

It is best to always start things slow when you are learning. Do one lap slowly then have a break. Keep doing only one lap til you feel like you can concur another lap without having a break.
Then do 2 laps and have a break. Keep doing 2 laps at a time with breaks in between until you feel like you can continue to do 3 laps.
See the pattern? Eventually you will be able to teach yourself to do as many laps as you like. Remember that this is more difficult to do if you don’t have an efficient stroke and if you don’t pace yourself.

Your not alone on this. I have the exact same issues with swimming. Never had a lesson. I sure appreciate the conditioning and technique required to be a better swimmer.

Excellant advice guys. I was given the same tips by other swimmers.
